Built at the turn of the 19th century, Lowther Castle is a confection of dramatic ruins, rich history, wild gardens and an elaborate adventure playground. A tour of the fortress, its grounds and its museum exhibition gives a fascinating insight into how it became a Lake District icon – even after being demolished.

Ullswater Steamers offer a wonderful, environmentally friendly way to travel across one of the most beautiful lakes in the country. Stop at Glenridding Pier, a former mining village that is home to the third highest mountain in England: Helvellyn.

Beatrix Potter is one of the Lake District’s literary icons. Well loved for her children’s classics including “The Tale of Benjamin Bunny” and “Mrs Tiggywinkle”, not many people know that she was also an important farmer, committed to the conservation of Herdwick sheep. The World of Beatrix Potter attraction gives a fascinating insight into her life, and the inspiration behind her stories and the characters within them.

From one literary classic to another, Dove Cottage was once the home of one of England’s finest poets, William Wordsworth. A visit to this historic home where he lived for eight years gives an insight into the life behind the man who captured the very heart of the stunning Lake District with his rich, evocative poetry.

Supplier Information

Name Lowther Castle Gardens
Category Attraction
Profile Of the many treasures waiting to be discovered in the English Lake District, Lowther Castle is a particular gem. Built at the turn of the 19th century, on the site of two previous houses, the castle was a grand affair boasting a room for every day of the year. Its gardens were the envy of the north. But in 1957 the castle was demolished. Just the façade and outer walls remained standing and for over half a century, the place was empty – home only to chickens, pigs and the odd bat. The gardens were lost to wilderness.

Having explored Wordworth’s home yesterday, today brings a visit to the 17th-century Hill Top Farm, former home of Beatrix Potter. Full of history, literary lovers can admire over 1,400 objects from the Beatrix Potter collection.

England is home to a number of historic narrow gauge railways, and the Ravenglass & Eskdale Steam Railway is one of its oldest and longest. Hopping on board guarantees a scenic journey as the train travels from Dalegarth to Ravenglass – the only coastal village in the whole of the Lake District National Park and a stunning place for lunch.

When it comes to haunted fortresses and stunning gardens, Muncaster Castle has it covered. A tour of the 13th century stronghold showcases its ghostly history, as well as some beautiful walking trails, a Himalayan garden and a vibrant bluebell wood. And for those who don’t manage to spot a ghost, they can always enjoy the maze, and one of the regular birds of prey displays!

Itinerary Details

No visit to Manchester is complete, without mention of “the beautiful game”! Day 4 of this itinerary begins with a tour of Manchester United’s football ground: Old Trafford. Football fans can not help but marvel at the museum which showcases 130 years of sporting history, and even non “footie fans” can not help but be impressed by the dressing rooms, players’ tunnel and manager’s stand at the 75,000 seater Theatre of Dreams.

The award-winning Spa at The Midland Hotel offers a luxurious and relaxing experience. It offers a range of treatments, spa breaks and spa days, as well as several relaxation areas – perfect for those seeking an opportunity to unwind.

Lunch today is at the laid-back Australasia restaurant. Inspired by modern life in the Land Down Under, we recommend dishes like the salt and pepper tofu, yellowfin tuna and seared teriyaki beef.

Not even all Brits realise that Manchester has a river and a canal running through the heart of the city! Cruising past Old Trafford, the Stephenson’s 1830 Bridge and the Mode Wheel Locks, it’s a great way to soak up some of the city’s best sights, from the historic to the modern.

The Lowry Hotel is named after the famous English artist, L S Lowry – reknowned for his paintings of industrial scenes of North West England. With a delicious afternoon tea selection this 5 star contemporary hotel is the perfect place to enjoy finger sandwiches, scones and pastries, with tea … and maybe a glass of champagne!

Thai dining and cocktails await at Chaophraya. With its platters and small plates, it’s the perfect choice for a sharing dinner.
